Why has size zero become so desirable amongst young people?

Throughout history and to the present day, a core belief of our culture is that women should have a certain body type. The Size 0 debate has now circulated all over the media, constant images in magazines tv and film with images of young and in many cases underweight girls walking down Londons catwalk runways are injecting young people with the image of a so called perfect body. Far less attention however has been paid to the perception of male body image, the most desirable shape at the time has always been the one most difficult to achieve at the period of time, as if too many women were able to achieve this it would remove its desired status and become the norm. Through different eras there have been different trends in for body shape especially for women such as the ancient chinese tradition of foot binding and lip stretching among African women. The cellulite of today was considered beautiful. Fatness was viewed as a sign of energy and health and the thin silhouette desired today was considered sickly and undesirable for a bride. Could this just mean the desired size 0 is following a trend for a certain body shape that has been in our society for centurys and does history show women have always been under more pressure than men?

i think size zero is SICK and i think we do have to blame the media for it. girls who have no self confidence will try and be like their 'peers' and their peers are who is in the media. curves are definetely better and if you ask any guy they will say the same! so why would you want to be size zero?

hello. i am a male and i can say with confidence that size zero is NOT attractive! so if you're a girl do not try and be size zero. we like something to grab girls!

i agree with ted. i think that size zero is really unattractive. i would take a second look at someone who is all bones and no meat.

i think the media has to take some responsibility for the pressure that young girls are faced with in today's culture. i feel that by presenting an unrealistic ideal of female body image shown by a size zero that young girls are comparing themselves with a female frame that is neither achievable or natural. Women are renowned for their curves and were built to bear children and are therefore are supposed to have boobs, hips, bum and thighs. I think that these UK size 4 catwalk models are just used primarily as walking coat hangers to show off designer collections and should not be compared as an everyday role model for young girls. This is both dangerous and should be controlled by the media before it gets out of hand!

size zero is not natural!! girls with no meat are just not attractive, from a males point of view. it would be like a load of really really skinny guys modelling clothes etc and the media making them fashion icons, but would girls find them attractive? unlikely...its the same with girls...humans werent supposed to be skinny little things! media is to blame! GARRR

i think the media has a major impact on the way people feel and look. people see celebs on TV and say that they want to look like that. I say ' more meat more treat'!

That model woman looks minging that aint attractive to look at women should be curvey these size zero girls shouldnt be as thin as the paper they're printed on and the media shouldn't award that

i think that size zero is unnecesary. it makes them look ill and i dont think many guys will be attracted to a girl who is size zero. its all about peer pressure and they think that if they are this perfect size, then they look great. they dont! its sick!

hey! im glad this issue has finally risen up! well i think that the popularity in size zero is terrible! i feel that everybody should keep to their own natural body shape- even if its not what they want.. you have to accept that its you! not try to change it to be like a skeleton! think of all the people in the poorer countries, like people on comic relief; who cant afford food and are dying, and here, where we are surrounded by it - we choose to let our bodies starve, when people are physically dying in other countries for food! - its just not right!!! people should think how lucky they are to have the opportunity to eat food.. not take it for granted and not even eat it! fair enough- some people's natural body shape is quite skinny, and they shouldnt be slated for that, but sticking-out bones are really not a good look! just think about it...

i agree that its not attractive, I personally think its over the top, but if they want to be that thin, then its up to them! I would say that media makes people think they have go to be thin, but its entirely up to the person to actually go that far.

i dont know if size zero is desirable amoungst young people?? but i do think it is desired by the media and by modelling agentcies n stuff. it isnt a very good role model for anyone and i think the media should take notice of this and change the models to REAL PEOPLE!so if young people do want to be/look like models they can stay healthy and not boney x
